Fundamentals of Organic Chemistry 01: “The Concept of Organic Compounds” In a narrow sense, organic compounds are mainly composed of carbon and hydrogen; they are compounds that necessarily contain carbon. However, this category does not include carbon oxides such as carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, carbonic acid, calcium carbonate and its salts, **, sulfur, cyanates, metal carbides, and certain simple carbon-containing compounds such as SiC. However, broad-defined compounds can be free of carbon. Organic matter is the material basis for the emergence of life, and all living organisms contain organic compounds. Fats, amino acids, proteins, sugars, heme, chlorophyll, enzymes, hormones, etc. Both metabolism in living organisms and genetic phenomena involve the transformation of organic compounds. Furthermore, many substances that are closely related to human life, such as oil, natural gas, cotton, dyes, synthetic fibers, plastics, plexiglass, and natural and synthetic drugs, are all closely associated with organic compounds. Definition: A general term for carbon-containing compounds (with the exception of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, carbonic acid, carbonates, bicarbonates, metal carbides, **, sulfur, etc.) or hydrocarbons and their derivatives. Inorganic compounds generally refer to compounds that do not contain carbon, but a few compounds that do contain carbon, such as carbon dioxide, carbonic acid, carbon monoxide, and carbonates, do not possess the properties of organic substances; therefore, these substances are also classified as inorganic. In addition to carbon, organic compounds may also contain elements such as hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, chlorine, phosphorus, and sulfur. In short, organic compounds are all carbon-containing compounds, but carbon-containing compounds are not necessarily organic compounds. The simplest organic compound is methane (CH4), which is widely found in nature. It is the simplest organic substance and constitutes the main component of natural gas, biogas, and mine gas, commonly known as gas. It is also the hydrocarbon with the lowest carbon content (and the highest hydrogen content), and it constitutes the main component of natural gas, biogas, oil field gas, and coal mine gas. It can be used as fuel and as a raw material for producing hydrogen, carbon black, carbon monoxide, acetylene, hydrocyanic acid, and formaldehyde.
