The analysis of trace arsenic in oils does not depend on the instruments used, but rather on how to handle the samples reliably. Due to the nature of trace analysis, a large number of samples need to be processed in order to increase the amount available for testing; this involves issues such as reagent blanks, contamination during handling, container cleaning, and the selection of analytical methods. There has been considerable research on the analysis of trace arsenic in petroleum products at the Research Institute of Petrochemical Sciences; some materials can be found by consulting their library.
Manual processing is too time-consuming and prone to human error; the previous methods used by the Institute of Rock Mechanics are no longer in use, and it seems that there are no national standard methods available in China at present. It seems that the Institute of Rock Sciences is currently using a PE ICP-MS, but its price is too high; the company will not approve it. I’m wondering if there are any alternatives that are cheaper yet still effective, with the ability to detect levels down to 1 ppb.
