Corrosion pits have appeared on the outer surface of the upper middle part of the desulfurization tower. The tower is made of ordinary carbon steel; its original wall thickness was 12 mm, while it is now 9 mm. It is 45 meters high and 7 meters in diameter. The area most affected by corrosion is between 40 and 45 meters in height, where the temperature ranges from 50 to 60°C. The corrosion takes on a honeycomb pattern, with a depth of around 1 mm. The main agents causing corrosion are nitrogen sulfide and sulfates. To find the best solution to this issue, we welcome active exchanges and discussions from everyone.
Is sulfate also involved in external corrosion? Is it insulated? In such cases, rust removal and anti-corrosion treatment are usually carried out again.

The external anti-corrosion coating for the equipment in our installations usually consists of an epoxy ferrochrome primer, an epoxy ferrochrome intermediate coat, and a polyurethane topcoat. The key aspect of the construction is to ensure thorough rust removal; for smaller areas, a grinder can be used, but it’s troublesome to obtain a fire permit on site.

This post was last edited by Anhui Dabang Anti-corrosion on 2016-7-9 at 09:35. After thorough external cleaning (using a portable automatic recycling sandblaster), a vinyl ester resin anti-corrosion coating is applied; Evonik and DSM are the better choices for raw materials.
Sandblasting is the best option, but it causes a lot of pollution; it’s not necessary for areas that aren’t particularly large.
