Does the ammeter show no reading after the water pump starts?

I’m an operator; one of our air separation unit’s cooling water pumps doesn’t show any current reading after it’s started, although it used to work fine before. We reported it to the electrician team, and they spent the whole morning checking things – examining the distribution cabinets and the wiring of the control panels. Later, they asked us to try restarting it again, but it still didn’t display anything. In the end, they told us that it was the ammeter that had burned out, saying something about the ammeter not being compatible and about electromagnetic transformers. . . Just a 7.0 or a 7.5 is enough to burn out the ammeter. I’m a complete beginner; could some kind person please explain it to me? Thank you

Ammeters come in types with and without current transformers. The current transformer is used to convert high currents into 0–5A currents that are then sent to the ammeter for display. If the ammeter gets damaged, it may be due to excessive current; it is necessary to identify the cause of the high current before replacing the ammeter.
