It is generally believed that the reason is mainly related to the operating parameters of the extruder; I think it is also related to the particle size of the material before being fed into the extruder. The impact varies across different industries. In short, if the volatile content is not up to standard, there will be problems in many applications, or the likelihood of such problems increasing significantly.
The volatiles in ordinary butyl rubber refer to the water content in the rubber; ordinary butyl rubber with a water content of less than 0.3% is considered of top quality, while that with a water content of 0.3%–0.5% is considered qualified. The price difference is a few hundred yuan. Customers naturally prefer as low a volatile content as possible, but the lower the volatile content, the greater the wear on the post-treatment equipment, which affects its lifespan. There’s not much to say about low volatile matter. The main issue to address is the high volatility. Reason: 1. The polymerization reaction is not optimal; the quality of your rubber is poor. In such cases, it’s difficult to control the post-treatment process, and the volatile content remains high. This situation occurs quite rarely, and when it does happen, the only option is to adjust the polymerization reaction ; 2. The reaction is normal and the Mennig value is high; the main issues lie in the post-treatment line, such as the rotation speed of the screw extruder, as well as the temperature of the TCU and the vibration angle.
