How is the corrosion margin of pipes determined?
Determined based on the design service life and corrosion rate.
Although it is based on the corrosion rate, there is usually a table from which a value can be selected directly: the corrosion allowance for stainless steel is 0, while for carbon steel it depends on the wall thickness; generally, the minimum value seems to be 1.5 mm. The greater the wall thickness, the greater the corrosion allowance. This is the responsibility of the pipeline engineering specialists, who also establish such tables. However, in many projects the values remain roughly the same

Theoretically, the basis for determining the corrosion margin of a pipeline is the designed service life of the pipeline and the annual corrosion rate of the pipeline caused by the media inside and outside it. However, with economic development, the increased variety of materials available for pipelines, the narrowing of differences in initial investment, as well as the costs and complexity associated with pipeline renovation and maintenance. Apart from large-scale engineering projects, for many ordinary projects and users, the concept of corrosion margin may have very limited significance; it is possible to simply use appropriate stainless steel materials or non-metallic pipe materials that are essentially free from corrosion.
