There are two ways to install the oil scrapper rings in reciprocating compressors. The first method involves placing two oil scrapper rings together, as shown in the diagram. The second method involves pairing one oil scrapper ring with a ring that functions as an air seal, and placing them together, as shown in the diagram. Which of these two installation methods is correct?
As a supplementary note, can the oil scrapper rings of vertical and horizontal reciprocating compressors be installed using the same method?
The second method is equivalent to an oil wiper packing. It serves both to scrape off oil and to provide isolation and sealing.
