Dear experts in this community, with the cyclohexane oxidation method, 8–10% dimeric products are generated as a by-product during the production and purification of crude alcohol (referred to as heavy oil); around 5,000 tons are produced each year, and its price is not high. Analytical test data: it contains 8% of ** and cyclohexanol, 45% of cyclohexyl**, cyclohexenyl**, with the remainder being polymeric and other components. Could any of the more experienced colleagues tell us how to make use of these by-products? I have been working on the development of this substance for a few years; it is commonly known as X oil. Several approaches have been tried: 1. Catalytic cracking – high levels of Na ions make it unusable, as the catalyst gets poisoned too quickly; 2. Separate cyclohexanol, **, and dimeric compounds; the dimeric compounds can be used to produce o-phenylphenol (OPP). However, there is a problem: after extraction, the residue in the reactor is in the form of solid resin, and 50% of this material cannot be utilized. Moreover, it cannot be sold as solid resin due to its strong odor ; 3. This stuff has a high oxygen content and a low calorific value, so it’s not very effective for burning. Yet it does burn well, thanks to the high oxygen content, as it doesn’t cause carbon buildup!
