The top of the acid tank in Workshop 94 has collapsed and the welds have cracked; a fire hazard analysis was conducted before performing repair welding, and it was found that hydrogen sulfide and carbon monoxide were present in the gas phase within that area – the reason for this is unknown; Please help analyze it, thank you ; Trough material: 321
There is suspicion of hydrogen; during explosion testing, carbon monoxide and hydrogen sulfide were detected
Is there a schematic? Where does CO come from? When it explodes, the volume expands, it doesn’t shrink! It is speculated that the gas phase in the 94% acid tank contains SO3, H2, and O2; upon hydrogen explosion, water is generated, and the volume decreases as a result of the reaction between water and SO3. Of course, this hypothesis remains to be verified.
The dishing of the tank wasn’t caused by the explosion; it happened because the vent wasn’t turned on during discharge, which led to suction-induced dishing; As a result, the weld was damaged; before performing repair welding, a fire hazard analysis was conducted, which revealed the presence of CO and H2S in the gas phase space above the groove
There are no vent holes at the top of the tank, or the relief valve is not open, which causes it to collapse
When discharging material from a tank, if the vent is not opened, continuous discharge of material creates a vacuum inside, and the negative pressure resulting therefrom causes the interior to collapse.:)
Maybe I didn’t explain myself clearly; I’m not asking about the reason why the groove collapses; Instead, the question should be: Why can CO and H2S be detected in the space at the top of the tank? Thank you
