The shell-side fluid is crude oil, with a design pressure of 6.4 and a design temperature of 50； ’The design pressure for the tube-side medium, steam, is 2.5, and the design temperature is 190. After checking some information, it is specified that metal toothed gaskets should be used for the equipment; may winding gaskets be used instead? What is the basis for the selection?
The selection is based on the manufacturer’s experience. They work quite well.

As part of proven engineering experience, it is still advisable to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations.
Here, we handle both design and manufacturing; when designing, we take into account that the medium is crude oil at 6.4 MPa – is it possible to use wound gaskets?
For standard crude oil with a pressure of over 4 MPA, wound gaskets are not recommended; instead, metal toothed gaskets are suggested. However, since those toothed gaskets are not well-known, it is worth considering whether wound gaskets can be used instead
Is there any standard I can refer to for this?
Based on experience gained from communicating with heat exchanger manufacturers, they choose wave-tooth composite gaskets.
