Hello everyone. I have just started working with analysis and design; I don’t have a formal background in this field. When studying the undergraduate textbook \"Process Equipment Design,\" there were several concepts that I didn’t fully understand. I would appreciate it if you could explain them to me. Thank you! Question 1: The plastic failure design criteria and the elastoplastic failure design criteria mentioned in Section 4.2 of the textbook – do these correspond respectively to the limit analysis and stability analysis discussed in Section 4.4.4.2? Question 2: Section 4.4.4.3 states that \"the allowable value for primary stresses is determined by limit analysis... while the allowable value for secondary stresses is determined by stability analysis.\" Can this be used to conclude that limit analysis is more conservative than stability analysis? If so, and simultaneously condition 1 holds, it can be shown that the plastic failure design criterion is more conservative than the elastoplastic failure design criterion.
First question, what you said should be correct. Second question: there isn’t really an issue of which method is more conservative when it comes to limit analysis and stability analysis, right? One is used to determine the allowable value for primary stresses, while the other is used to determine the allowable value for secondary stresses; they don’t seem comparable to each other.
