I’m not very clear about sizes such as DN40 11/2″ 38.1, etc. Some sources state that DN40 corresponds to 48 or 45, while others say that DN40 at the ends corresponds to 38.1; it’s getting more and more confusing. Is it true that pipe sizes and fitting sizes cannot be used interchangeably? Please explain in detail. Is there also a standard size table for pipe fittings?
It’s normal; different standards result in different diameters corresponding to DN. For example, for DN40 as you mentioned, the outer diameter for imperial pipes is 48, while for metric pipes it is 45; the outer diameter for sanitary-grade pipes is 38.1. Therefore, for the accompanying pipes and fittings, it is necessary to specify the standards; or you can simply indicate the outer diameter plus wall thickness.
