I came across a good way of labeling pipelines in a process flow diagram, which is based on the ASME standard; for example, 50-PL-101-BBC-H40, 50-VT-603-CBA-H50, and so on. I had never encountered this style of notation before, and no detailed information about it could be found online – only the codes related to pressure levels. 50 is the pipe diameter, PL is the medium code, 101 is the pipeline number, BBC is the material grade, and H40 refers to the type and thickness of pipeline insulation
Could you explain the material grades in more detail? What do these three letters mean respectively, and what are the other codes used to denote material grades?
I really don’t know about the BBC notation you mentioned; ask the designers. The most common format is “letter + number + letter”. For example: L 1 B L – where L represents the nominal pressure class of the pipe, 1 is the sequence number for the pipe material grade, and B is the code for the type of pipe material. The nominal pressure class is indicated using uppercase letters; A–G are used for ASME standard pressure classes: A: 150LB (2 Mpa), B: 300LB (5 Mpa), C: 400LB, D: 600LB (11 Mpa), E: 900LB (15 Mpa), F: 1500LB (26 Mpa), G: 2500LB (42 Mpa). H–Z are used for domestic standard pressure classes (I, J, O, X are not used). For low pressure: H: 0.25 Mpa, K: 0.6 Mpa, L: 1.0 Mpa, M: 1.6 Mpa. For medium pressure: N: 2.5 Mpa, P: 4.0 Mpa, Q: 6.4 Mpa, R: 10.0 Mpa. For high pressure: S: 16.0 Mpa, T: 20.0 Mpa, U: 22.0 Mpa, V: 25.0 Mpa, W: 32.0 Mpa. The sequence number for the pipe material grade is indicated using Arabic numbers, ranging from 1 to 9.
