Could anyone give some examples? Apart from the flow rate factor, what are the differences between gate valves and globe valves? How are they chosen in practical engineering applications?

A globe valve has low inlet and high outlet; a gate valve is different. A globe valve presents higher resistance, while a gate valve has lower resistance. Globe valves can be used in hydrogen environments, but gate valves cannot. Globe valves cannot be used for drain systems, whereas gate valves can – there are many applications for them. . . . .
The common application is in gas cutoff valves; for gas pipelines such as steam pipes, globe valves are more frequently used, while gate valves are more commonly employed for water and liquid pipelines.
Theoretically, gate valves do not have a regulating function, whereas globe valves do. Gate valves have no directionality, whereas globe valves have defined inlet and outlet ports. The opening and closing stroke of a gate valve is longer than that of a globe valve. If installed on a safety device, the stop valve should preferably have flow from below to above to facilitate opening in emergency situations. Personal opinion

One thing to note: since the flow channels are different, gate valves can be used to pass balls, but globe valves definitely cannot!
