In Section 11, Part 3, Article 4 of Industrial Pipeline Layout Design and Engineering Applications, flat-welded steel flanges cannot be welded directly to seamless elbows; a straight pipe section is required. I’m not quite sure why it can’t be connected directly.
For a flat-weld flange, part of the pipe is inserted inside, and then welds are made at both ends? The large and small ends are simply inserted directly. If the flange needs to be adjusted or reinstalled, then the large and small end fittings will have to be cut, and I’m afraid that’s not allowed. If a small plug is inserted, there will be no space for installing/removing the bolts; after all, there may be a valve on the other side of the flange, and it may not be possible to pull the bolts out from that side.
From the perspective of easy installation, it is indeed not very suitable.

I agree with you as well. From the perspective of butt weld flange welding, pipeline maintenance and repair. If the reducer is welded directly, there will be many inconvenience factors later on.
