I’ll try to explain it. Criticism is welcome. It’s used for turbulence control: when a rod is inserted into a fluid that is flowing in a directed manner, the Karman vortex street phenomenon occurs, resulting in vortices forming behind the rod. Moreover, natural wind does not flow at a constant speed, which leads to irregular vortex streets forming behind the rod. The wind then flows back toward areas of lower pressure, and these irregular backflows cause irregular vibrations. Over time, the rod can break. I’ve seen chimneys break due to wind before; later, I helped design one that took this issue into account, though it wasn’t spiral-shaped – a spiral design would be more scientific. I believe the force generated by the vortexes is directed longitudinally and transmitted vertically to the chimney base, thereby reducing the radial shear forces and vortex vibrations.
