What type of bolts are used for stainless steel flanges? Is carbon steel bolt actually used to reduce costs in practice?
Galvanized carbon steel, or stainless steel bolts; A2-70 is commonly used
304 and 316 stainless steel bolts are low-strength bolts, and they can withstand only a limited amount of preload. When such bolts are used with flanges that have high stiffness or with semi-metallic and metallic gaskets that are hard, the insufficient preload may prevent proper sealing.
Galvanized steel bolts are generally used.

Stainless steel bolts or carbon steel bolts can be used. Carbon steel bolts generally have higher strength and can meet the requirements for use, while stainless steel bolts are of low strength when left untreated and cannot satisfy the strength requirements; however, they can be made into high-strength bolts through solution treatment plus hardening, after which they can be used.
Unless otherwise specified, 35CrMo bolts and 30CrMo nuts are generally used in the design. It has high strength and low cost. A2-70 and A4-70 are bolts with strength on par with that of 304 and 316 grades; the next higher grade is 80. If that’s not sufficient, solution hardening can be used, but this makes the cost higher, so it’s generally not necessary.
