The first digit in IP66 indicates dust protection; 6 represents the highest level for this aspect. It is also backward compatible with the second digit. The digit 6 denotes protection against high-pressure water jets, while 5 indicates protection against water sprays – with 6 being the highest level. Digits 7 or 8 refer to protection against continuous or temporary submersion in water. The dimensions of protection for the two are different. Therefore, products with dual certification are often seen in terms of protection levels, indicating that they can meet two different protection standards simultaneously. The following are the requirements specified by IEC standards; however, if dual certification is available, they can be used interchangeably: ●A very common mistake is to think that IP67/68 provides better protection than IP66. This is WRONG, as Section 6 of IEC60529 clearly states: An enclosure marked with only the second characteristic number 7 or 8 is considered unsuitable for exposure to water jets (marked with the second characteristic numbers 5 or 6), and it does not need to meet the requirements specified for numbers 5 or 6, unless it is labeled with both codes, i.e., IP X6/IP X7 or IP X6/IPX8
IP67/IP68 cannot replace the protection levels of IP66 or IP56. The IP66 dust protection rating is the highest level, and it is backward compatible with waterproof ratings. IP67 or IP68, on the other hand, refer to the protection level against continuous or temporary static immersion. The dimensions of protection for the two are different. Products with two-factor authentication can meet two different levels of protection simultaneously. According to IEC standards, it is not suitable for use in waterproof spraying unless the second digit is 7 or 8, and provided that it also has a certification with the second digit being 5 or 6. .
