On April 23, 2025, the project \"Research on High-Strength Hydrogen Transport Pipeline Steel and Development of Related Engineering Technologies\", carried out jointly by Sinopec Guangzhou Engineering Co., Ltd., Petrochemical Machinery Corporation, Hefei General Machinery Research Institute, and other organizations, underwent an interim evaluation in Beijing organized by Sinopec’s Science and Technology Department. Chen Xuedong, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, as well as relevant departments at the headquarters and Xinxing Company, attended the evaluation meeting. This project was approved for funding at the headquarters’ technology department at the beginning of 2024; it represents a new attempt by the company in the field of hydrogen storage and transportation technologies, following the successful development of the research project on \"materials and equipment for ultra-high strength, high-pressure hydrogen storage\". Over the past year or so, the company has worked closely with various relevant parties to conduct extensive analysis, comparison, and research in areas such as the requirements for high-pressure hydrogen pipeline transportation, steel plates used for hydrogen pipelines, accompanying welding materials, and steel pipes. It has completed most of the research tasks specified in the contract, including material development, industrial prototyping and performance evaluation, development of accompanying welding materials, as well as design of hydrogen transportation systems and research on manufacturing processes. As a result, a set of technologies related to process innovation, engineering design, and production manufacturing has been developed, laying a solid foundation for further implementation in industrial demonstration applications. The experts present agreed that this project conducted a comprehensive and systematic study of the process flow for long-distance hydrogen transmission systems, pipeline installation, equipment selection, automatic control and HSE technical solutions, as well as economic analysis, and formulated the \"Technical Specifications for the Design of Hydrogen Transmission Pipeline Systems\" ; A pre-welding process design method for straight-seam pipes suitable for hydrogen transport pipes with a large thickness-to-diameter ratio has been developed. The X65MH steel plates, straight-seam submerged arc welded steel pipes, and associated welding materials developed meet the required specifications; it is recommended that they be tested and applied in hydrogen transport pipeline projects.
