As the title suggests, for flange connections, should it be a butt-welded flange with a circular cross-section or a socket-welded flange?
This is a regular flat welding flange (PL type flange)
Sometimes it’s really hard to tell; there’s one weld after another, with two welds inside and outside. You can check the grease and look at the flange markings; the stamp on the photo shows them.
On the surface, isn’t socket welding just another type of weld as well?
Look at the figure below: plate-type butt weld flanges have protrusions, and socket weld flanges also have protrusions; this indicates that it is a plate-type butt weld flange
Flanges without protrusions are plate-type butt weld flanges, while those with protrusions are socket weld flanges and necked butt weld flanges; these two types are difficult to distinguish from each other.
It is most likely a flat-weld flange. Because socket weld flanges are generally used for pipelines below DN50; from the photos, it seems that the pipeline in question is larger than DN50
