I. Key Industrial Sectors
1. Petrochemicals and Refining
Dynamic/static sealing points such as high-temperature valves, pumps, agitator shafts in reactors, and flanges. These components must be able to withstand hydrocarbons, acids, bases, solvents, as well as media containing sulfur and hydrogen.
2. Power Generation (Thermal/Nuclear)
High-temperature and high-pressure steam systems such as main steam valves, boiler level gauges, turbine throttle valves, and circulation pumps. In nuclear power plants, valves for the primary circuit and pipelines carrying radioactive materials require low mass loss and radiation resistance.
3. Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals
Shaft seals for equipment such as reactors, dryers, centrifugal pumps, agitators, and filters. PTFE-impregnated versions are used in food-grade or GMP applications to meet cleanliness requirements.
4. Oil and Gas (Onshore and Offshore Platforms)
Components such as wellhead devices, oil transfer pumps, compressors, control valves, and LNG cryopumps. Carbon fiber-graphite packing is suitable for high speeds (≤25 m/s) and can resist particle erosion.
5. Shipping and Papermaking
Sealing elements for stern shafts, pulp cookers, high-speed centrifuges, vacuum pumps, etc. These components need to be wear-resistant, have good thermal conductivity, and remain stable in seawater and weak acidic or alkaline environments.
II. Typical Equipment and Locations
1. Dynamic Seals: Shaft seals for centrifugal pumps, piston pumps, agitators, compressors, and vacuum pumps.
2. Static Seals: Valve stuffing boxes, flanges, manholes, access ports, heat exchanger end caps, and expansion joints.
3. Special Conditions: Low-temperature pipelines for liquid nitrogen/liquid oxygen, high-temperature flue gas desulfurization towers, and pumps handling slurries with solid particles.
With advancements in wire reinforcement and impregnation techniques, the application range of graphite packing has expanded from traditional valves and pumps to areas such as nuclear power, aerospace propulsion, offshore platforms, and even household high-temperature valves.
