Secondly, the learning content consisted mainly of pure theoretical knowledge. Thirdly, there were many people studying together, with teachers providing guidance and supervision. After starting work, many things have changed. I’m constantly faced with various dilemmas; it seems that academic learning isn’t as important anymore, since there’s very little theoretical knowledge required for my job. Theoretical knowledge only holds significance when it can be applied in practice. Therefore, merely studying from books isn’t enough. Currently, I’m involved in the dry electrolysis of caustic soda, but the plant is still under construction. Most of our time is spent examining blueprints to identify any flaws or deficiencies in the design. However, it feels like we haven’t managed to uncover any fundamental problems at all. Perhaps our analysis wasn’t thorough enough, and we didn’t devote enough time to it—but that’s no excuse. The most important issue is that none of us has any practical experience. Right now, we don’t have any experienced caustic soda workers at all. It’s a bit difficult to learn the ropes, as there’s no one to ask for help. Faced with such a situation, how should we learn*? One should learn various practical techniques: DCS, analytical testing, and process control. # hcbbs
It seems that merely looking at the drawings is far from enough; it remains at a theoretical level. It would be better to go to other chlor-alkali plants for a period of time to observe firsthand how operations such as starting up, shutting down, and emergency shutdowns are carried out
To be honest, it’s quite rare to find newcomers like the OP who have some real insights. The OP says they can’t identify any fundamental problems; but in reality, how many can actually be identified? And how many people treat the demons’ errors as sacred commandments? I’m afraid there are quite a few. True knowledge comes from practice. Newly graduated students must understand this principle: they should personally practice and think about everything, rather than simply parroting what others say. Studying drawings is also a form of practice. By examining drawings, one must visualize the three-dimensional structure of the factory in their mind; only then can problems be identified, rather than simply understanding the principles and concepts. Wish the OP, in the new year, to rapidly grow into an expert in the chlor-alkali industry through various projects and endeavors. In fact, doing engineering is the best way to develop one’s abilities; of course, it’s also extremely demanding.
