Dear experts: Our company produces approximately 10,000 tons of sodium sulfate per year as a by-product. From the perspectives of environmental protection and comprehensive utilization, we are considering adopting the membrane electrolysis process used in the chlor-alkali industry to install a facility capable of processing 10,000 tons of sodium sulfate per year. The dilute sulfuric acid and alkali solutions produced can be reused on-site. We are interested in knowing which type of equipment would be suitable, the power consumption associated with it, as well as the costs involved in purchasing and installing such equipment. Sodium sulfate electrolysis cannot be compared to the chlor-alkali industry; it is much more difficult than electrolyzing sodium chloride. There are hardly any ready-made devices available on the market, and if such devices do exist, they are extremely expensive – so expensive that it’s hard to believe. There is a similar technology that produces a mixture of 15-20% liquid caustic soda along with sulfuric acid and sodium sulfate; the cost of equipment for this process is lower, with approximately 4,000 kWh of electricity required per ton of caustic soda produced.
