According to Sinochem News, recently, the new metallocene polypropylene catalyst SMC-PL02, independently developed by the Beijing Research Institute of Petrochemicals under Sinopec, was put into industrial use at Guangzhou Petrochemical’s No. 2 polypropylene plant, enabling the successful production of two new high-end metallocene polypropylene products: MC1005 and MC1009. Such products boast advantages such as low precipitation, high purity, and high transparency, and can be widely used in high-end fields such as premium packaging, functional films, and synthetic fibers, filling the gap in the production and application of related high-performance materials. It is understood that BEIC relies on its own core catalytic technologies to help manufacturing enterprises overcome the production challenges associated with high-performance polyolefin materials. Since 2025, the SMC-PL01 metallocene catalyst developed by Beijing Institute of Chemical Technology has been successfully implemented on an industrial scale at Guangzhou Petrochemical, Zhongyuan Petrochemical, and Yangzi Petrochemical, enabling the accumulation of substantial experience in industrial production. Building on previous application achievements, the metallocene catalyst technology team at Beijing Institute of Chemical Technology focused on actual production scenarios to systematically summarize the key experiences in the industrial use of catalysts. By working closely with manufacturing enterprises and chemical sales companies, and by addressing the needs of plant operations as well as the performance requirements of downstream products, they carried out specialized technical research efforts to continuously improve the core catalyst system. As a result, a new type of SMC-PL02 metallocene polypropylene catalyst with improved performance was successfully developed. During the trial production of the new product, the metallocene catalyst technology team from Beihua Institute worked closely in collaboration with the manufacturing enterprise, maintaining close coordination throughout the process. Team members were on site at all times, monitoring the key parameters and critical stages of the equipment operation, and keeping strict control over the production process to ensure that the trial production proceeded smoothly and efficiently. As a result, all the set experimental goals and production tasks were successfully completed. Next, BEIC will continue to optimize and upgrade the core technologies related to metallocene catalysts, further strengthen its technical support capabilities, help metallocene polypropylene products enter high-end application markets and enhance their competitiveness in key markets, and accelerate the transformation of the polyolefin industry toward a higher-quality direction characterized by high performance, differentiation, and unique features.
