What is the composition of the water used to soak methanol in the etherification unit?

The water used for soaking methanol in my setup contains high levels of COD; I’m not sure what components are responsible for this. Moreover, even after treatment through an extraction tower, the COD level remains high. I wonder how others deal with the water used for soaking. What are the components of water?
The catalyst in the etherification unit is soaked in methanol; its main component is still methanol
The COD of pure methanol is extremely high, basically in the tens of thousands.
