What are the reasons for the compressor piston rod to keep moving up and down during operation?
The clearance of the piston rod on the crankshaft is too large, the bearing shells are loose, the clearance between the piston rod and the copper sleeve is too large, the crosshead nuts are loose, the packing and packing barrel are severely worn, and the clearance of the crankshaft bearings is too large.
The piston support rings are worn out; the fit tolerances between the various mating components have not been selected properly. The machining processes, such as grinding, have not been carried out correctly – the positioning references are not the same, or there are excessive geometric errors between these references.
1. Excessive clearance in the main shaft bearing shells; 2. Excessive clearance in the connecting rod big-end bearing shells; 3. Excessive wear of the piston head support ring; 4. Excessive clearance between the crosshead and the upper and lower slideways; 5. Excessive clearance between the crosshead pin and the small-end bearing shells.

What is the typical wear rate of support rings?
It depends on the pulsation; it’s impossible if there’s no pulsation at all. Check whether it is within the allowable range.
