I would like to ask what is the typical clearance between the balance drum and the balance seat? The single-sided clearance of this multi-stage pump I have now is 1.3 mm – is that appropriate? Based on the recent maintenance checks, the mechanical seal on the inlet side is showing significant wear, and the thrust bearings are also heavily worn. The lubricating oil tends to darken, and it seems that the axial force is too high; the clearance is likely too large. So, what should it be adjusted to? Are there any standards?
It’s too big. This is what manufacturers usually provide; our radial clearance is generally between 0.30 mm and 0.60 mm

Most multi-stage pumps these days are equipped with a balance drum mechanism; it is also important to pay attention to the gap between the balance discs. The balance drum works in conjunction with the balance sleeve, and if the gap you set is too large, the balancing device will not function properly. By checking the pressure in the balance tube during operation, it is possible to determine whether the balance drum is working as intended.
