How to determine whether it is a mechanical seal pump or a packing pump
The mechanical seals used in seal-pump systems are assembled from various components, including stationary and rotating rings, springs, sealing rings, etc. In contrast, packing seals are relatively simpler: several pieces of packing (such as packings made of graphite, F4 material, or asbestos rope) are compressed inside the packing chamber and come into contact with the pump shaft or shaft sleeve, thereby providing a sealing effect.
The packing seal must allow a slight leak, while mechanical seals generally should not permit too much leakage; on the outside of the mechanical seal gland, there are a rotating ring for holding the shaft, a locking ring, and a limit plate!
In those using fillers, there is generally a gap between the gland and the sealing chamber
Generally, the gland of the mechanical seal’s static ring is thicker than that of the packing
It’s not always possible to tell just by looking at the appearance; such sealing caps can also have mechanical seals

If there is no gap or gaskets can be seen, then it’s a mechanical seal. In cases where the mating surfaces are not visible at all, it is usually a mechanical seal
