On February 22, 2012, the first such filter press developed through collaboration between Sinopec’s Shanghai Petrochemical Polyester Department and relevant manufacturers was successfully tested. At Unit 2 of the polyester department’s oxidation complex, this new type of filter press replaces the pressure centrifuge and vacuum filter used in the original PTA separation system; it saves nearly 20,000 kWh of electricity per day. Together with water and steam savings, it helps reduce operational costs by about 20,000 yuan per day. In addition, millions of yuan in equipment maintenance costs can be saved each year. Unit 2 of the polyester oxidation plant was put into operation in the early 1980s, and it is one of the oldest plants still in use in China’s PTA industry. The original design of the PTA separation system in this device used two-stage high-speed centrifuge units, which resulted in high energy consumption and high maintenance costs. In 2005, the unit was upgraded with a vacuum filter to replace one of the high-speed centrifuges, resulting in a significant reduction in energy consumption. Two years ago, the polyester department took the initiative to seek out domestic manufacturers of related equipment in order to collaborate on developing this new type of filter press.
