As shown in the figure, is it possible to weld 12 thick plates to 2 plates of a thinner thickness, by simply overlapping and welding them together? It’s better to have full penetration as shown in the diagram. Given that the thickness of the motherboard is only 2 mm, could there be a problem of the motherboard being welded through during welding operations?
No need. One issue is weld penetration, and it seems that welding in this way will cause significant deformation.
Is it a direct butt weld? Can it be done without groove preparation? Thank you
There is absolutely no need to cut grooves; this structure is also not suitable for welding with grooves. If the support plate is long, it is recommended to use intermittent welding between them, and the weld angles should not be too large.
It is recommended not to use grooves, as excessive heat can easily burn through a 2mm thick plate, resulting in significant deformation
Without grooving, this structure is not very good; it’s best to add a gasket of about 6–8 mm and weld it to the support, with the gasket then being spot-welded to the 2-mm thick plate
Without a groove, 2mm thick plates are prone to burning through, and the degree of deformation is also high.

The 2mm welding material was penetrated in no time; adding a shimming piece to reinforce the motherboard wasn’t sufficient, as direct welding wasn’t appropriate.
