There is a stainless steel composite plate with the material composition S31603+16MnDR and a thickness of δ3+14. The tensile strength limit for the base material 16MnDR is 620 MPa, while there is no upper limit specified for the tensile strength of the clad material. If, during full-width tensile testing, the tensile strength exceeds 620 MPa, is that considered acceptable?

The strength of the coating is generally not taken into account in composite panels, and 316 steel cannot have an excessively high tensile strength; it must be a problem with the base material.

This formula only specifies the minimum tensile strength required in MPa, but there is an upper limit for the base layer, while no such upper limit exists for the composite layer. How should this be calculated? The problem remains as in the example I gave: if stretching is carried out together with a composite layer, and the tensile strength exceeds the upper limit required for the base material, how should this be determined? Also, the tensile strength of the S31603 material mentioned by Haiyou earlier can easily exceed 600 MPa.
The poster can check the Rm value on the warranty certificate to see what the values are for the substrate and the coating material
Hehe, that’s right. We were conducting tests on heat treatment to improve performance, and we encountered this situation: after the heat treatment, the values listed in the warranty certificate were no longer useful for reference. Moreover, what troubles me is the full-board stretching method; if the composite layer is removed, there’s no doubt left.

The standards for composite steel plates specify the minimum values of Rm for both the overlay material and the base material; the minimum value of Rm for the composite plate is calculated using the formulas specified in the material standards. A value of Rm greater than 620 should be considered acceptable. Check again whether the Rm value of the base material specified in the warranty sheet falls within the acceptable range; if doubts remain, then a tensile test on the base material alone will be necessary.
Where did you buy your composite panels?
I think we can only make more samples: for those testing tensile strength, remove the coating; for those testing the coating’s strength and interfacial adhesion, keep the coating in place!
