For welds such as those on spherical tanks and large storage tank bodies, calculating the volume of these welds and using it to determine the amount of welding material required is a very effective method for assessment and control. However, for most steel structures and complex welded structures, an approximate amount is generally estimated; for steel structures, the amount of weld metal is estimated at 1.5% of the equipment weight, while for tower-type containers it is 3%.
