Can ultrasound testing detect fillet welds? Can radiographic testing detect fillet welds? Could someone summarize which welds can be detected by both X-rays and ultrasound? Which welds cannot be detected? Testing steps – and for on-site welding, should X-ray or ultrasonic testing be used?
Neither of these two methods is suitable for the inspection of fillet welds; surface inspection is generally used for fillet welds. Radiography is generally used for the inspection of butt welds. Ultrasound is suitable for the inspection of butt joints and deposited welds.
Ultrasonic testing can be used to inspect fillet welds; it is effective for detecting cracks. However, ultrasonic testing is not very sensitive to stainless steel.
