Atmospheric horizontal storage tank, 16 m3, diameter 2000, cylinder length 4400, wall thickness 8 mm. There are 8 feed pipes on the upper side of the cylinder, with these pipes extending down to the bottom of the cylinder. A manhole also needs to be installed. There are two design options now: 1. The manhole is placed in the center, with 4 feed pipes on each side of the manhole ; 2. Place the manhole to the side, and then arrange the 8 feed pipes in sequence. Which one is better? Explain the reason.
I think the first design is better than the second. Firstly, placing the manhole in the center facilitates access for operators to enter and exit the tank for inspection, maintenance, and other tasks, and it does not occupy the space of the feed pipe, thereby increasing the flexibility in arranging the feed pipe. Secondly, placing the 8 feed pipes on either side of the manhole allows for a more even distribution of the feed pipes, reducing the situation where they are concentrated in certain areas. Finally, the location where the manhole is placed also affects the structural safety of the storage tank; placing the manhole at the center allows for better weight distribution and reduces structural risks. .
Either of the two options works; there’s no principled decision to be made. It is generally set according to the process requirements.
First, follow the process design; if no such design is available, it is best to use the first method of arrangement. The advantage of this is that it facilitates the layout of the process pipelines – if manholes are located in the middle, the process pipelines will inevitably have to go around them.
If it’s just an ordinary feed and discharge tank, there’s no difference between the two
1. Check with the owner for any special requirements regarding the location of the manhole; 2. Check whether the inlet pipe can discharge smoothly; if it can, there is no significant difference.
Placing two manholes at each end with end caps facilitates maintenance and ventilation
The second option is better. For each pipe outlet in this tank, reinforcement calculations for the openings are required. Taking into account the normal range of reinforcement, the distance between adjacent pipe outlets should be at least equal to the sum of the diameters of their openings. Since the manhole is located in the middle, it occupies a lot of space; therefore, careful calculations are needed when arranging the pipe outlets on both sides. For manholes on horizontal tanks, horizontal hatches are commonly used; if they are placed in the middle, it is also necessary to ensure that the connecting pipes surrounding them do not interfere with their opening.
