For ASME atmospheric storage tanks, five types of tank roofs are specified; the standard specifies a \"supported flat roof.\" However, I have a small atmospheric storage tank that is located indoors, with a diameter of around 1000, and its roof is not subjected to any other loads. I’m specifically asking on the forum: for ASME atmospheric storage tanks with a diameter of around 1000, is it okay not to install supports? If no support is provided, how should the handling of the tank roof design be explained?
First, determine what the design standard is: API650 or ASME8-1.

ND-3850 specifies 5 types of tank roofs (P159), with the second one referring to flat-roof tanks, clearly stating it as a \"supported flat tank roof\". If it is designed without support, what is the basis for that? Because the standard does not include an item for “self-supporting flat tank roofs”. It should be noted that the ND3800 atmospheric-pressure storage tanks have a very large diameter, in the range of twenty to thirty meters. It certainly includes those with a diameter of around 1 meter, but for tanks of that diameter, self-supportance may be sufficient; of course, having support is definitely safer. I just want to ask if there are any precedents in the forum of people having designed self-supporting flat tank roofs, and how ND3851 was handled in those cases.
If you design it according to 8-1, then supports may not be necessary, as long as the wall thickness calculations meet the requirements and the connection method specified in the standards is used.
