May I ask whether, according to ASME B8-1 USC66.1, the exemption from impact testing refers to an exemption for the manufacturer’s impact testing or for the steel supplier’s impact testing? If it is exempted, then must the impact test specified in SA-20 still be carried out for steel orders?
I think the impact test for suppliers should be waived. The impact test at the manufacturing plant should fall under the requirements for material reinspection.
The original poster didn’t read the specifications carefully. The exemption from impact testing for UCS66.1 applies to container components. To give two examples, a flanged blind plate and a tube section with longitudinal welds – if neither of these components is exempt from impact testing, then if the warranty document for the flanged blind plate includes data on impact testing conducted at a temperature not higher than the MDMT of the blind plate, it is not necessary to conduct additional impact testing on that blind plate. For tube sections with welds, impact test plates must be welded, and the welding procedure qualification supporting such welds also requires impact testing; furthermore, the test temperature must not be higher than the MDMT of the tube section.
