I would like to ask everyone: for atmospheric-pressure equipment operating at around 150 degrees Celsius, with corrosive gases and moisture present, can reinforcement rings be added to the pipe connections in order to reduce the risk of leaks? Will doing this help reduce the likelihood of leaks and extend the lifespan? Will it still increase the stress at the joint, causing stress concentration?
Adding reinforcement rings does not reduce the likelihood of leakage at the joint; the weld between the fitting and the shell can adopt a full-penetration design, and surface inspection methods can be used to minimize leakage
The reinforcement ring is only provided to reinforce the opening, and signal holes are also included; it does not serve any purpose in preventing leaks
The reinforcement ring is used to strengthen the structure after the openings reduce its strength.
Do not misunderstand the function of the reinforcement ring.
Find solutions in terms of welder skills and management instead
By ensuring good manufacturing quality, the likelihood of leakage in Class D connectors is very low
If it is a corrosive medium, choose a fitting with a slightly thicker wall thickness; ensure good welding quality, and it doesn’t matter whether reinforcement rings are used or not.
The reinforcement ring is a strength component and cannot prevent leakage. Theoretically, adding a reinforcement ring can reduce shape discontinuities, lower stress concentration, and decrease stress corrosion compared to not using one. However, if the goal is merely to reduce stress, it is more reliable to achieve full penetration of the weld, smooth transitions in the weld, and rounded inner walls of the fittings – all of which are easier to accomplish than using reinforcement rings. Combined with surface probing and penetration tests, there should be no problems.
