Dear Haihao friends! During the construction of the rainwater drainage pipes and inspection wells on the road outside the control room in my project, old underground pipelines were encountered. According to the slope requirements of the drainage pipes, it was not possible to avoid these pipelines or modify them; therefore, the only option was to enclose the old pipelines within circular inspection wells. Please refer to the pictures – is this approach appropriate?

The old pipeline should be under pressure, right? Can’t take a detour? If nothing else works, the old pipelines need to be better protected by using plastic sleeves to prevent corrosion; otherwise, the pipes might get corroded through.
The old pipeline has fire-fighting water and electrical and instrumentation conduit sleeves; this well is a rainwater well, so it should not be corrosive. If it is bypassed, it will affect the drainage of gravity flow pipes
If a similar problem arises again, consider shifting the pipe well to avoid existing underground pipelines.
This situation occurs occasionally in renovation projects, indicating that the design of the rainwater drainage systems did not take into account the original underground topographical data (or the client failed to provide such data). As can be seen from the image, the underground pipe occupies a relatively large portion of the flow area in the rainwater drain; therefore, this drain needs to be inspected and cleared more frequently in the future. However, if this phenomenon occurs in all the manholes along the entire length of the drain pipe as designed, the design team needs to provide an explanation and conduct a reevaluation.
