Can a spherical head for a high-pressure gas storage tank be replaced with a spherical cap head, and then the cylinder be trimmed so that it can be welded to the spherical cap head? Or is cladding the only option?
Our company uses a surfacing structure, but the X-ray inspection results are not good. Our peers suggest carrying out equal-thickness butt welding between the tapered cylinder and the spherical head; would this approach result in better X-ray inspection outcomes?
Thin the cylinder; the thinned section serves as part of the spherical head.
Are you referring to a spherical crown head? Is the crown head connected to the cylinder via a fillet joint?
Trunk edge trimming is more convenient; the surfacing structure requires higher standards for welding, and it is difficult to control local stresses
A hemispherical head can be used, and the cylinder can be trimmed to enable butt welding with the hemispherical head. Cladding can also be considered, but butt welding is the more common method. .
It involves cutting the spherical head shorter, lengthening the cylinder to make up for the shortened portion, and then thinning the cylinder so that its thickness matches that of the head; this facilitates weld inspection.
