(hereinafter referred to as “CIMC SOE”) reached a major milestone: the world’s first 3,000-cubic-meter liquid ammonia fuel tank (Project No. T198), designed for the 210,000-ton ammonia-fueled bulk carriers being built for Qingdao Sunrise and Beihai Shipyard, was successfully loaded onto a ship and shipped off to the shipyards. This marks a historic breakthrough for CIMC SOE in the manufacturing of key equipment for clean energy ships. It is reported that the liquid ammonia fuel tank successfully delivered this time is the first of its kind – a large-scale marine liquid ammonia fuel storage unit – to be designed, constructed, and delivered on a global scale. The project involves a total of 10 ship sets, each equipped with two separate C-shaped liquid tanks, with a designed capacity of 3,000 cubic meters per tank. Its size and the welding properties of its materials represent the highest standards in the industry today. As a highly promising \"zero-carbon\" marine fuel, liquid ammonia does not produce carbon dioxide when burned; its widespread use is one of the key pathways for the shipping industry to achieve the emission reduction targets set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The successful delivery of this batch of liquid ammonia fuel tanks lays a solid equipment foundation for the commercial operation of ammonia-fueled ships.
As the first set of products for a globally pioneering project, the development process of the T198 project was filled with unprecedented challenges.
