What software is used to calculate high-pressure feedwater heaters with three-stage heat transfer? Only handwritten materials were found online. Can HTRI and EDR be used? Are there any relevant materials? Thank you.
For 3-stage superheaters, various manufacturers use their own calculation software; this is because the steam cooling stage, condensation stage, and desuperheating stage need to be calculated separately although they influence each other, and they also share the same piping system. Therefore, it is difficult for general-purpose software such as HTRI to perform accurate calculations. Moreover, merely completing the heat exchange calculations does not guarantee that the product will be reliable. Due to the special nature of three-stage heat exchange, as well as the high temperature and pressure conditions under which the superheater operates, there are many details that affect the product’s lifespan and need to be taken into consideration. In short, the plant’s high-pressure heater is a very special type of shell-and-tube heat exchanger; applying ordinary heat exchanger calculation methods to its thermal calculations poses significant difficulties and risks!

I heard for the first time that this requires calculation by the manufacturer; everything else is fixed. For Harbin Steam Turbine and Dongfang, there are ready-made designs for units ranging from 200MW to 1000MW (designed by steam turbine companies). It’s not that such calculations can’t be done, but rather, there is years of experience in using these systems – the heat exchange area and structure are fixed. Nowadays, most high-pressure feedwater heaters are no longer compatible with power generation units; each one is different, and calculations have to be done separately for each case
It depends on factors such as the piping structure and the type of segmentation; or it is calculated in segments based on the actual structure. Different three-segment algorithms result in significant differences in the heat transfer coefficient.
