When undergraduates work on their graduation projects, the length of the heat exchange tubes is set at 6 meters; this results in 500 tubes being needed. The number of U-shaped tubes is reduced by half, to 250. So, does that mean the length of the heat exchange tubes has to be increased to 12 meters? Thank you all in advance.

The nominal length of the U-tube refers to the length of its straight sections, so this nominal length remains unchanged before and after any changes. However, when it comes to the tubes in each individual layer, their lengths do change – the shortest one is definitely longer than 12 meters.
