However, history must not be forgotten. The creation of the first package of chemical fertilizers put an end to the history of being exploited by foreign powers due to a backward chemical industry. Fan Xudong, the founder of Nanjing Yongli Tin Factory and a national industrialist, described that important moment on the afternoon of February 5, 1937, in his notes as follows: “The great powers were competing in the field of high-pressure ammonia synthesis, and this now became a reality in China. Our country already had soda ash and caustic soda; but this could only be considered one aspect of it.” ; Now with sulfuric acid and nitric acid, another aspect is added. With these two wings, our country’s chemical industry can take off and soar. ” As the \"largest factory in the Far East\" and a large-scale integrated enterprise that produces sulfuric acid, nitric acid, and fertilizers, Nanjing Yongli Sulfuric Acid Factory features sophisticated technology and a massive scale, with a design capacity of 39 tons of synthetic ammonia, 120 tons of sulfuric acid, 150 tons of sulfuric anhydride, and 10 tons of nitric acid per day. It took three years and three months for the Yongli Phosphorus Plant to go from the start of construction to producing China’s first batch of fertilizer. Back then, this was a pace of construction that was enough to make the Chinese proud and draw the attention of the rest of the world. Hou Debang, the first plant manager and known as the \"Father of the National Chemical Industry,\" overcame the obstacles posed by foreign powers and broke through the blockades. He spent 120,000 dollars to hire the American company N.E.C. to prepare the design drawings, imported high-pressure machines from Germany, gas furnaces and synthesis towers from the United States, and some other equipment from Britain and the Netherlands. At the same time, all equipment that can be manufactured domestically is sourced internally. One morning in the deep winter of 2015, with mist and rain shrouding Nanjing, our group stopped at the Nanhua Chemical Plant History Exhibition Hall. What was on display there was China’s first pack of fertilizer, commonly known as field fertilizer powder. Zhu Ligeng, chairman of Nanjing Hui Long Fertilizer Co., Ltd. who was also present, said that this is the original packaging from 80 years ago. Zhu Li Geng is now in charge of the operation of the Red Triangle brand. Standing in front of China’s first pack of chemical fertilizers, our thoughts wander through the long river of history. 80 years ago, China’s population was about 400 million ; 80 years later, this figure soared to 1.4 billion.
