Chile approves $2.5 billion green ammonia development project

Recently, the “Volta Project”, a green ammonia development project in Mejillones, northern Chile, officially received environmental clearance, marking its formal approval. The total investment in this project amounts to 2.5 billion dollars. It is being developed by the Chilean company Mechuyones Ammonia Energy, and construction is planned in two phases, with each phase producing 310,000 tons of green ammonia per year, ultimately achieving an annual production capacity of 620,000 tons. Construction of the project is expected to begin in 2027, with commercial operation set to start in 2029. Once the project is fully operational, it will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by over 1 million tons per year. The project will also include the construction of a 600-megawatt solar power plant and an energy storage system, and it will make use of all the wastewater currently discharged into the sea from the city of Mejillones. The location boasts abundant solar resources and is close to Chile’s major mining areas, which helps to boost demand for green ammonia in the country. This facility is Chile’s first industrial-scale green ammonia project to complete all permitting procedures.
