What to focus on during detailed drawing review? Those who have experience in thorough drawing reviews know that the key to such reviews lies not in the quantity of checks but in their quality. Some chief engineers, having extensive experience, examine project drawings very carefully – paying close attention to architectural plans, elevations, wall details, and various specifications – and they manage to identify numerous issues. Just from the design specifications alone, they can come up with a dozen or so suggestions. Yet these issues are not even worth mentioning compared to other problems that arise during thorough reviews. When construction actually begins, issues that require rework still occur, causing financial losses for the client. Why do such problems arise? There are various reasons for this, and I will provide some examples based on my own practical experience. 01 Focusing on compliance issues with standards: Compliance with drawing standards is an issue that every professional pays attention to, and the responsibilities in this regard are clear. After a set of complete construction drawings is prepared, it goes through internal verification, review, and assessment by specialized agencies. Given that it has been reviewed by so many professionals, there should be very few compliance issues by the time the drawings are ready for printing. Even during thorough reviews, such issues still occur, but not frequently. In many projects, thorough reviews and agency assessments are carried out simultaneously; we can identify such issues, and the reviewing agencies can generally detect them as well, since they are also professionals in this field. The difference is that when agencies conduct their reviews, they focus on compliance issues, while in thorough reviews, compliance issues are not the main focus. 03 Focus on reviewing intersection issues: During thorough review of drawings, there are many common errors and omissions, including various types of issues related to intersections between different elements in the drawing. These issues include problems with the way elements are represented, the labeling of dimensions, inconsistent font usage, and outdated standards. In fact, having more elements to review does not necessarily mean that the drawings are error-free; it’s just that different people focus on different aspects. A longer review report or a larger number of comments does not necessarily indicate better quality in the review process. Many experienced designers who have just left design firms examine construction drawings in great detail; even for a single set of design specifications, they can come up with a dozen or so suggestions. They also offer numerous comments regarding the way the drawings are presented and regarding any updates to relevant standards. In reality, this does not have any significant impact on the client or the construction party – it does not affect the schedule or costs. It simply shows that these designers pay close attention to the details, but it doesn’t necessarily mean they can identify the key points. To assess the quality of content, it is necessary to consider issues from the perspective of other related fields as well, rather than focusing only on problems within one’s own field. Many problems within a particular field can be resolved fairly easily once they are identified; what matters most is understanding the interconnections between different fields. This involves more than just simply overlaying diagrams – one needs to be able to interpret technical drawings from various fields and possess certain skills in reading drawings from other specialties. As experience in reading drawings increases, it becomes easier to identify the areas where mistakes are most likely to occur and which issues are particularly important, as shown in the diagram below
