What happens if the high-level tank of a heat transfer oil system is not placed at the highest point of the system?
The heat transfer oil sprays out after filling the high-level tank. The setting height of the sump must take into account the backflow pressure and the suction force of the circulation pump.

The level of the heat transfer oil reservoir is insufficient; as a result, some of the returning oil flows back into the reservoir through the top of the oil-gas separator. The oil-gas separator fails to perform its function of separating oil from gas, and this mixture enters the circulation pump. This causes the circulation pump to operate intermittently with no oil flow, leading to insufficient flow in the boiler’s coils and overheating. Further, this results in coking, while the reservoir overflows, requiring frequent refilling of oil for the operating system.
