A plate and frame filter press is used for filtering the material; the particles are quite fine, estimated to be around 10μm in size. We prefer to start operations at a pressure of 4 Kg (with a maximum of 6 Kg). The chief engineer said that such high pressures should not be used during filtration, as this can cause the particles to block the pores in the filter fabric, resulting in a slower filtering speed. He advised us to start with a pressure of 1 Kg and gradually increase it, similar to the operation of a centrifuge (starting with a low rotation speed and then increasing it). Could some expert give some guidance? Does this type of filtration operation also require the same approach as centrifugation?

What the chief engineer means is to apply a pre-coating first to form a filter cake, thereby reducing clogging of the filter cloth.
It depends on the properties of the material and impurities, as well as the condition of the filter cloth; some factors have an impact, while others have little effect. But the operational details mentioned by your chief engineer are correct in 99.9% of cases, which helps to prevent reckless handling, hehe! !
