Question: To cool 8 tons of steam at 105 degrees Celsius and a pressure of 30 KPa to a liquid state, how much circulating water is required? The temperature of the circulating water is 32 degrees Celsius.
Find the latent heat corresponding to the steam; determine how much cooling water is required for heat balance calculations using this latent heat
If a condenser is used, calculations are needed, as well as for the fouling thermal resistance. It’s not about theoretically considering heat balance.
The latent heat of vaporization of low-pressure steam is approximately 2200 kJ/kg. With a temperature rise of 10°C for the circulating water, about 420 tons per hour of circulating water is required.
It is relatively easy to calculate using both the enthalpy and entropy of steam; in addition, the temperature rise of the condensed water is also required. It’s actually a simple heat exchange calculation. However, the enthalpy value of steam and that of water at 100° need to be looked up; it’s just a bit tedious.

The amount of water required for circulation to condense one ton of low-pressure steam can be estimated fairly easily. In the southern region (the designed temperature difference for circulating water is 5°C, ranging from 32°C to 37°C), with a ratio of 100 tons of circulating water per ton of steam, the water flow rate would be 8 x 100 = 800 tons per hour. In the north (the designed temperature difference for circulating water is 10°C, with a range from 32°C to 42°C), based on a ratio of 50 tons of circulating water per ton of steam, the capacity is 400 tons per hour. . For the latent heat of vaporization of low-pressure steam, you can use 500 kcal/kg as an estimate; it’s not entirely accurate, but the precision for estimation is sufficient. . .
