I’m asking for help from those who are more experienced. I graduated in 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering and Technology. I used to work at a state-owned petrochemical plant, but I have since left that job. I really want to learn more about water treatment; however, I’m not familiar with the relevant professional knowledge or the practical aspects involved. I hope to find a mentor on this website to help me acquire systematic knowledge in water treatment.
What have you learned over these six or seven years? The production site is the best place to learn, and the workers are the best teachers. It would be inappropriate to resign hastily without having acquired any skills; it is recommended to review your work experience over the past few years, summarize the lessons learned, identify the practical problems and challenges that arose in production, how they were resolved, and how things could be improved. By doing so, you can develop your own set of skills, which may be useful for your future career development. Of course, it’s never too late to start over, but one needs to weigh the options carefully, have a clear understanding of oneself, know exactly what one needs, and figure out in which areas one can make the most of their strengths!
I have been working in the petrochemical industry for many years; after quitting my job, I moved to a city where the petroleum industry is not well-developed, so I had to change fields. I still want to work in the chemical sector, so the experience I gained from working in the petroleum industry is not useful anymore, and I need to start over. I personally prefer working in the chemical field, and after careful consideration, I decided to learn water treatment skills from scratch. However, I don’t have any foundation in this area, so I hope to find an experienced teacher to help me. I do have some basic knowledge, but for long-term progress, I still need guidance from a teacher.
In these days, why do such pointless things? To learn something, one can either find materials for self-study or spend money on training courses, or else learn from superiors at work*
I studied environmental engineering at the undergraduate level, and chemical engineering at the graduate level. In fact, early environmental engineering was largely derived from the chemical industry. From my academic experience, the fundamental theories of the two are similar; in many aspects, the knowledge required in the chemical engineering field is somewhat more advanced than that in water treatment. If you’re going to work with water treatment, you should have no problem with system knowledge. If you are studying this field, it is recommended to read the standards and specifications for water treatment. I recommend a set of books: the 12-volume \"Water Supply and Drainage Design Manual\" series.
I agree with you. If there are any questions, they can be posted on the forum for discussion. As for learning from a master, having the right attitude is sufficient; even when learning from a master, it is the master who shows the way, but it’s up to the individual to practice
At your current level, it’s not a matter of what you like, but rather what job you are doing and how you can improve yourself: The water treatment industry is large, and sometimes quite challenging; companies that deal with wastewater treatment require strong capabilities or good connections in order to succeed； To deal with difficult-to-treat wastewater, comprehensive and in-depth expertise in chemical engineering is required.
