Dimethyl sulfoxide is generally produced by the dimethyl sulfide oxidation method. Due to the different oxidants and oxidation methods used, there are different production processes. 1. Methanol carbon disulfide method: Methanol and carbon disulfide are used as raw materials, and γ-Al2O3 is used as a catalyst. Dimethyl sulfide is first synthesized, and then oxidized with nitrogen dioxide (or nitric acid) to obtain dimethyl sulfoxide. 2. The hydrogen peroxide method uses acetone as a buffer medium to react dimethyl sulfide with hydrogen peroxide. The cost of producing dimethyl sulfoxide using this method is high and is not suitable for large-scale production. 3. Nitrogen dioxide method uses methanol and hydrogen sulfide under the action of γ-alumina to generate dimethyl sulfide ; Sulfuric acid reacts with sodium nitrite to form nitrogen dioxide ; Dimethyl sulfide is then reacted with nitrogen dioxide in a gas-liquid phase oxidation reaction at 60-80°C to generate crude dimethyl sulfoxide. It can also be directly oxidized with oxygen to generate crude dimethyl sulfoxide, which is then distilled under reduced pressure to refine the finished product of dimethyl sulfoxide. This method is a more advanced production method. 4. Dimethyl sulfate method uses dimethyl sulfate and sodium sulfide to react to prepare dimethyl sulfide ; Sulfuric acid reacts with sodium nitrite to form nitrogen dioxide ; Dimethyl sulfide and nitrogen dioxide are oxidized to obtain crude dimethyl sulfoxide, which is then neutralized and distilled to obtain refined dimethyl sulfoxide. In addition, dimethyl sulfoxide is produced from dimethyl sulfide by anodization. Refining method: After distilling dimethyl sulfoxide under reduced pressure, add alumina and let it sit overnight. Use a distillation tower with a height of 50cm and filled with ceramic saddle packing to perform vacuum distillation at 266.6~399.9Pa and 50℃, and collect the middle fraction. Or heat dimethyl sulfoxide and CaH2 together for one day, distill under reduced pressure, dry with molecular sieves, and then distill under reduced pressure under nitrogen flow. It can also be crystallized and refined step by step. 5. Perform a gas-liquid phase oxidation reaction between dimethyl sulfide (produced by the reaction of dimethyl sulfate and sodium sulfide) and nitrogen dioxide (produced by the reaction of sulfuric acid and sodium nitrite) at 60 to 80°C to obtain crude dimethyl sulfoxide, which is then distilled under reduced pressure, dehydrated with molecular sieves, and then rectified under reduced pressure to obtain the finished product dimethyl sulfoxide. Thanks for the help. I would also like to know whether the following final reactants can be dehydrated directly under vacuum, or do they need distillation to reach 99.9%?
What process do you use for dehydration? Ask your boss, or the person who provides you with the process. If you need distillation and purification, I can do it here.
No one has provided me with a process to study on my own. I just want to know what purity can be achieved by vacuum dehydration, and whether it can reach 99.9%.
How long does the hydrogen peroxide oxidation reaction take? Can 24 pieces of material be steamed in one kettle of the distillation tower?
